Numbers that mattered: Match No. 49

Rajneesh Gupta

MUMBAI: Here are some numbers that came to the fore during Kings XI Punjab’s one-run win over Deccan Chargers in the DLF Indian Premier League in Johannesburg on Sunday

514 Runs scored by Rohit Sharma in all IPL matches for the losing cause – the most by any batsman.

19 RP Singh’s three wickets in the match took his tally of wickets in IPL 2009 to 19 in 13 matches. With this he became the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, moving ahead of Mumbai’s Lasith Malinga's tally of 17 wickets in 12 matches.

3 Three wickets in three balls for Yuvraj Singh: he dismissed Herschelle Gibbs off the last ball of his second over and then Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao off the first two balls of his third over. This was the second hat-trick for Yuvraj in IPL. He had accomplished the similar feat against Royal Challengers Bangalore at East London on May 1.

2 Kings XI Punjab provided the second instance of a side registering one-run win in the IPL. Interestingly Kings XI Punjab have been involved in both of them. They had beaten Mumbai Indians by one run at the Wankhere Stadium in Mumbai last year.

1 Yuvraj’s feat of two hat-tricks is unparalleled in the history of Twenty20 matches. A total of 23 bowlers have taken a hat-trick in official Twenty20 matches, but no one else has done this more than once.

0 Deccan Chargers have not beaten Kings XI Punjab even once in four IPL games – two in 2008 and two in 2009.
